Perfectly “Peared”

Pears Aplenty!

Pears Aplenty!

If you’re anything like we are at Hamby, you’re probably still catching up after the busy holiday season and reminiscing over the delicious holiday cuisine in which we all love to overindulge. For many of us, the ushering in of the New Year signals an end to those tasty treats as we try and opt for dishes with a little more healthy flare. Eating healthy can sometimes be a chore, but here at Hamby we’re drawing inspiration from all around to jive up our healthy options!

One of our favorite options for the season is the delicious Bosc Pear. Bosc pears have a more firm, dense flesh than other pear varieties, so they are ideal for use in baking, broiling or poaching. They retain their shape and texture better than other varieties, and their flavor is less likely to be overwhelmed by the use of strong spices like cinnamon, clove or nutmeg.

At Hamby, we love to lightly poach our Bosc pears in a chardonnay with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. These go beautifully on top of our Hamby Signature salad; a blend of baby spinach, Boston Bibb & Frisee lettuces, blue cheese crumbles, candied pecans, and Olde Colony Bakery cream bread croutons. We like to dress it all with a light champagne vinaigrette, but a sweet sorghum vinaigrette would be another tasty way to finish this salad. If we’re being honest, these “pear” well with just about anything!

Try adding poached pears to your favorite salad for a sweet, savory, and healthy topping! Or, call Zach Sharpe, our delightful Hamby To Go specialist, to place a healthy order for some Hamby Signature Salads to be delivered to your door today. 843.725.4035

Why bake when there is Watermelon Cake?

Healthy, Delicious and Refreshing

Take a look at one of our chef’s innovative and inspiring wedding “cakes”.  James Johnson, Hamby Catering’s master pastry chef, designed and created this healthy, artistic, and fabulous watermelon display to resemble an actual decorated wedding cake.  This healthy and fun alternative could be the talk of any occasion.  It could easily serve as a groom’s cake, the solution to a sweet tooth craving at a family reunion, or as a wonderful substitute to the ever popular and traditional fruit display.

James hand carved each of the “flowers” that adorned the cake, magically turning fruits into flowers.  Cantaloupe daisies, honeydew asters and papaya lotus blossoms accented the magnificent, unique, creation.

Let us not forget the overwhelming advantages of the ever so indulging watermelon. Did you know that watermelon is 92% water, contains no fat, no cholesterol, and is a significant source of vitamin A and C, fiber, and potassium?  In addition, watermelon serves as a popular, widely available treat in many cultures around the world.  Serving as a desert, a snack, a pickle, or a compliment to a summer salad, watermelons have satisfied our cravings for years and years.

So forget the old saying, “A moment on the lips forever on the hips”.  Let our watermelon cake put the cool on your lips while shedding the weight from your hips.  So here it is…a beautiful wedding cake that you can indulge in to your heart’s content… your healthy heart’s content that is!
