And they’re off! The Post & Courier’s Steeplechase of Charleston is a true Lowcountry experience, one that’s deeply rooted in southern culture and dates back to 1792. Today’s Steeplechase event has been reimagined for a new generation, but still stays true to tradition with classic horse races, southern fare and elaborate attire. Bring on the bowties & big hats!

Team Hamby was honored to join the Steeplechase for the second year in a row. The race day energy at Stono Ferry Racetrack is absolutely thrilling; the air buzzes with excitement and anticipation as the crowd waits to see which horse will outrun the rest, and we get to be right in the middle of the action!

Steeplechase is also an exciting challenge for our team, with so many moving parts and logistics to plan. This year, we had the opportunity to create a variety of menus and set up multiple tents and mobile kitchens on-site. We were also separated by the race track and had to split up our team, equipment and all of our food into two stations to service both sides of the venue. On top of that, we were met with two previous days of rain leading into the event. Preparation for the muddy grounds was key! It was a logistical spiderweb, but we found a way to make it work while serving delicious food to more than 1,000 attendees.

We crafted our menus with an elevated southern flavor, and each dish was carefully constructed so guests could easily eat while watching the races. We served a range of southern staples, including our Carved Beef, Mac & Cheese, Pulled Pork, Potato Salad, Carolina Slaw and an array of other salads. We served special afternoon snacks, featuring Mrs. Hamby’s Famous Tea Sandwiches (always a crowd favorite!) and festive sweets inspired by the theme. Attendees loved our Gluten-Free Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies, Vegan Cupcakes with Rose Petal Icing & Pecan Tartlets.

We also set up a special donut & hot coffee stand in the Vendor Village, which was a huge hit with the crowd!

It truly takes a village to make sure everything runs smoothly at events of this caliber. In total, we had 30 team members on-site, including our executive chef, sous chef, event producers, talent manager, off-site director and our owner, too! We prepared a crazy amount of tea sandwiches, towed our own box truck out of the mud and served 1,000+ attendees for 5 straight hours – but the madness was all worth it. Not only did we receive rave reviews on our food and service, but we also had a blast.

We hope to be back for more at the 2020 Steeplechase of Charleston!
