Hamby Catering and Events is excited to announce its 2023 Easter menu, with classic favorites as well as new offerings and expanded options. Two packages are available, and each serves eight guests: Bourbon Brown Sugar Glazed Ham for $229 and Braised Boneless Short Ribs for $279. The Charleston Metro Chamber Community Champions Awards, presented by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, honors those businesses and individuals who made an impact in 2020. Hamby Catering is being awarded with our Small Business Champion award, which recognizes an outstanding small business who has overcome adversity by implementing creative and innovative strategies. It was 1979 when the husband & wife team of Fran & Tom Hamby helped two close friends plan their daughter’s wedding reception. The classically elegant wedding menu was prepared in the Hamby family kitchen and received high marks and positive “buzz” from many of Charleston’s leading residents. Steve Hamby, son to Fran & Tom, joined Hamby Catering in 1987 as production manager and never looked back. Word of mouth helped grow Fran’s Lowcountry home cooking into a full-fledged catering business, and success mandated the move into her first storefront in Charleston in 1988. In 2011, Mrs. Hamby’s great nephew Wes Ellison took on an ownership & leadership role with the family business, and immediately set out to reinforce Hamby’s reputation as the premier full-service catering outfit in the Lowcountry. The family-oriented culture has been crucial to the company’s success and time-treasured recipes. In 2017, after seven years

Charleston, S.C. — For Owner Candice Culbertson Hudnall, and many other members of the hospitality industry, the world turned upside down on March 13, 2020, when Gov. McMaster shut down the state due to the threat of Covid-19. “It was a devastating time for many, particularly in the hospitality industry,” says Wigfield. “I asked our team, ‘how can we pivot quickly to answer the needs of the Charleston community, while also keeping people working?’” The solution was The Hamby Market, which became both a way to give back to the Lowcountry, as well as a means of survival for the company. With the entire state shut down, Hamby was set for a huge loss thanks to a drastically decreased catering business. However, the expansion of The Market allowed Hamby to pivot their business model in order to survive. Through “grit and hustle,” the Hamby team came together to provide a convenient and safe way to feed Lowcountry families, and for Wigfield, this collaboration and teamwork has been the key to success. “When I shared the news with Team Hamby about the Small Business Champion Award, everyone just cheered,” says Wigfield. “Being recognized for our efforts of doing what we could

Out of the 200,000 nominations for 6,000 businesses in 300+ categories, we are humbled to win this prestigious honor. This recognition is particularly impactful and meaningful for Team Hamby in light of the tumultuous past seven months, during which time the hospitality industry – along with many others – has been economically, physically and emotionally devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
