Our Story

It was 1979 when the husband & wife team of Fran & Tom Hamby helped two close friends plan their daughter's wedding reception. The classically elegant wedding menu was prepared in the Hamby family kitchen and received high marks and positive "buzz" from many of Charleston's leading residents. Steve Hamby, son to Fran & Tom, joined Hamby Catering in 1987 as production manager and never looked back. Word of mouth helped grow Fran's Lowcountry home cooking into a full-fledged catering business, and success mandated the move into her first storefront in Charleston in 1988.

In 2011, Mrs. Hamby's great nephew Wes Ellison took on an ownership & leadership role with the family business, and immediately set out to reinforce Hamby's reputation as the premier full-service catering outfit in the Lowcountry.

The family-oriented culture has been crucial to the company's success and time-treasured recipes. In 2017, after seven years with the company, Candice Culbertson Hudnall stepped in to oversee all operations of Hamby with her father, Wayne Culbertson. This duo marks the second, multi-generational ownership for Hamby Catering, making sure that heart and tradition stay at the root of our service.

Today, Hamby has added new culinary, design and customer relations talent to its team, ultimately resulting in a more full-service, customizable approach for clients. Hamby Catering & Events is proud to be the city's most celebrated caterer, serving each event with particular focus on providing guests with an extraordinary experience.

What started as a favor to a friend’s daughter became what is now a house built on that same core value – paying it forward. Heart, tradition and honor are what you can expect our team to continue to deliver, conveyed in the same style fostered and manifested by Mrs. Hamby all those years ago.

Though her shoes can never be filled, we still endeavor to continue the journey she set forth on over 40 years ago – serving delicious food that fosters memories for generations to come.

Employment Opportunities

Sous Chef

The Sous Chef is a key member of the Hamby Catering & Events culinary team, with opportunities for growth and advancement. This role is primarily based in the Hamby commissary kitchen, supporting daily food production and preparation for events. In addition, the Sous Chef will occasionally serve as a culinary leader at offsite events, providing a unique opportunity to work both behind the scenes and in a client-facing environment.

Event Chef

The Event Chef serves as the culinary lead for offsite events, overseeing all culinary aspects of event execution while representing Hamby Catering & Events at the highest level. This role requires strong leadership, organization, and communication skills, with a focus on pre-event preparation, on-site execution, and post-event wrap-up.

Event Lead

Hamby is seeking candidates for the position of Event Lead. Detailed-oriented, strong communication and the ability to multi-task are a must! The Event Lead job responsibilities include oversight of event staff, food presentation, and set-up and breakdown of equipment, as well as ensuring event outcome meets or exceeds client expectations. Specific responsibilities are subject to change.

Food Station Attendant

Server

Hamby is seeking candidates for the position of server. Detailed-oriented, strong communication and the ability to multi-task are a must! The Server Job responsibilities include food presentation, set-up, and breakdown of equipment, as well as ensuring event outcome meets or exceeds client expectations.

Cook

The function of the Cook is to prepare all Hot Foods following the specifications of Hamby Catering and Events. The Cook shall prepare all foods following our recipes. The Cook shall ensure that all foods are prepared are tasty and have great eye appeal. If you are looking for a rewarding position in a fast-paced environment apply today!

Prep Chef

The prep chef position will help assist in our hot kitchen and cold kitchen. The prep cook will ensure all food is prepared for all client orders both for the Market at Hamby and Offsite Catering Events while upholding the Hamby standard. The position will adhere to and follow the guidelines that are set by the Executive & Sous Chefs.

Pastry Chef

We are currently seeking an experienced Pastry Chef to quarterback our dessert and baked goods department. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in culinary arts with a passion for sweet and delicious creations, for both exciting recipes and new creations. This role will service both our retail location, The Market at Hamby and our offsite catered events.

Market at Hamby Retail Associate

The Market at Hamby is currently seeking a high-energy individual with the gift of gab, a can-do attitude and the ability to see the glass half full to work in our retail store. Ideal candidates will pride themselves on their professionalism & communication skills, and should be outgoing, personable, and detail-oriented. Past positions should involve working with people; areas could include sales, customer service, event management, hospitality, and retail.
